Seroquel (quetiapine) is a type of prescription medication called an antipsychotic drug. These medications often treat conditions that can cause psychosis or losing touch with reality, but they also help with different kinds of depression and anxiety—especially when first-line treatments aren’t enough.
There are two types of antipsychotic drugs. “Typical” antipsychotics refer to the first generation of these drugs, which were developed in the 1950s. “Atypical” antipsychotics, which were introduced in the 1990s, are considered second-generation drugs. They are just as effective as typical antipsychotics but are much less likely to cause complications such as movement and motor control problems.
Seroquel (quetiapine) is an atypical antipsychotic. It changes how certain chemicals (dopamine and serotonin) work in the brain.

I took this medication 2 years ago. I was prescribed Seroquel XR, and I was able to sleep better. I didn't have any side effects, so I felt like I wasn't alone. I have been on a for a long time and have not felt my best. My psychiatrist suggested it. He recommended it because it was the best of the two meds, not Seroquel.

I had been on Seroquel for 6 months and I thought it would be better than Xanax, Klonopin, Tylenol and other "non-sedating" medications, but when I started taking it, I began to feel very anxious. I didn't like taking my meds. I was very depressed. I was afraid of what was going to happen next. The first time I started taking it I could feel my anxiety and I didn't want to be in the same room with the people I was with. I could not concentrate, I didn't sleep well, and my anxiety was very bad. I started taking Seroquel every night for a few days, and I felt really comfortable.
I took this med for 1 year. I had been on this for 3 years and was feeling very anxious. I was worried that I would never see a psychiatrist, but I started to feel that I could never tell my psychiatrist if I was taking the med or not. I was told that the meds were not very strong or effective. I took this drug every day for 3 months, then every day for 4 months I was not able to sleep, I felt very anxious and depressed. The anxiety and panic became so bad I had to take the meds for a year. I did not want to talk to my psychiatrist about it, and I have since been taking Seroquel. The anxiety and depression became so bad I was afraid I would never see a psychiatrist. I was so scared that I could not tell my psychiatrist if I was taking the meds.
